M.S. Geology Candidate

aponcelet@fullerton.edu

I am a geology M.S. Candidate at California State University, Fullerton. My focus of study/work includes sedimentology, carbonate petrology, and well sampling. My current thesis focuses on paleoceanographic reconstruction using  a combination of sequence stratigraphy and chemostratigraphy. I am also a teaching instructor for Intro to Earth Processes Lab (GEOL 101L) and a Graduate Assistant for Dr. Adam Woods.

Professional Statement

Since starting my master's candidacy at CSUF, I’ve had the opportunity to learn and advance my knowledge in fields such as geochemistry and well sampling from experienced trained professionals. I hope to use these skills to obtain a career in a challenging and progressive work environment focused in environmental/municipal data collection.

Current Research

A DETERMINATION OF THE TIMING AND CONSEQUENCES OF THE LATE ORDOVICIAN GLACIATION USING THE ELY SPRINGS DOLOMITE OF EAST CENTRAL CALIFORNIA

My current research investigates the Ely Springs Dolomite to better understand the timing and extent of the poorly constrained Late Ordovician glaciation, while also advancing the growing knowledge on ancient carbonate platforms during periods of enhanced greenhouse conditions. My methods include:

1) Sequence stratigraphic analysis to resolve the timing and magnitude of sea level changes

2) Evaluation of warm and temperate water carbonate assemblages across the Ordovician-Silurian boundary to examine when cool, deep waters impinged onto the carbonate ramp

3) Determination of carbon isotopic values for every 1.5 meters of the Ely Springs Dolomite. This will be used to correlate two localities with the well-constrained global carbon isotopic chemostratigraphy of the Late Ordovician.

Assist in well data extraction, entry, and mapping with HydroDave software to understand groundwater dynamics.

Teaching Assistant (GEO101L)

August 2016 - Present

As a teaching assistant in GEO101L, my focus is to teach students the essential components of geology while emphasizing the need for using logical/analytical methods to obtain conclusions.

Graduate Assistant

August 2016 - Present

My responsibility as a graduate assistant includes updating my thesis advisor on current research findings and to help in necessary laboratory analysis.

Research Assistant to Post Doctorate Fellow (Marie Curie)

June 2015 - August 2016

Conducted research for 6 weeks in Wyoming and South Dakota measuring sections within the Jurassic Sundance Formation and collecting fossils for paleo-ecological and chemical data. I also participated in project management and logistics for research conducted throughout the 6 week research duration
